review 1: Absolutely breathtaking--the world building, the characters, the plot, the setting...did I mention the characters?? What sealed it for me was a moment near the end when the priestking is explaining the nature of curses (as they exist in their world) and sorrow and pain and tragedy...just the seamless way that Melina Marchetta wove that throughout all three books...got me right in the gut. IT JUST MADE PERFECT SENSE. It hit me in a spiritual, head-nodding, eye-tearing kind of way. Not only was it beautiful but beautifully done.
review 2: This book was nothing but sweet, sweet payoff. I'm so glad I stuck with this series even after having a lukewarm reaction to Finnikin of the Rock. The very best kind of high-fantasy novels are the slow build kind, and Marchetta ... moredid that perfectly over the course of this trilogy. By the time I got to the finale, I was completely in love with the world she created. Somehow Marchetta even managed to turn my least favorite plot points from Froi of the Exiles (the Phaedra/Lucian/Valley storyline) into the most rewarding part of the book. Seriously, is Phaedra my favorite secondary character of the trilogy now? YES SHE IS! Just, god, all of those women protecting Quintana...just...yes, the feels. But mostly I was there for Froi and Quintana's beautiful, heartbreaking, fucked-up love story, and Marchetta did not disappoint. less
