review 1: Not a huge fan. Melina Marchetta writes beautifully, of that there is no doubt. But the characters are all so dramatic that is becomes unbearable for me. Nobody acts like a normal human being would act in this book. 90% of the conflict in the book could probably be avoided if the varying characters would just sit down and learn to communicate rather then immedietly get mad anytime anything happens. So dramatic. No logic. All decisions based off emotion by every character. Gets tiresome. By the time this book was ending I realized I was not really interested in reading the final book.Also the story just abruptly ends and is all cliff hangers. I'm a bit annoyed that I now have NO idea what actually comes of all the stuff I read. Only read this book if you are will... more to commit to both this book AND the last book of the series. This story was so drawn out it could have been fully wrapped up in one book if they had avoided some of the neverending internal struggles between characters.DESPITE ALL OF THIS... Melina describes a really immersive world and I STILL felt myself getting invested in the characters and wanting to know what happened next. If only her writing style was a little more dynamic or relatable to me. Others might enjoy it though.
review 2: This book follows two storylines; one takes place in Lumatere and the other in Charyn. Most of the book concentrates on the characters in Charyn. We are introduced to new characters and their back stories as well as Froi’s origin. I felt both stories were necessary and enjoy them both. The Charyn chapters kept me wanting to read more and were never boring. The chapters on Lumatere were fewer buy they were very emotional and heartfelt. That last section in the epilogue was a total surprise. Can’t wait to read Quintana of Charyn. less
