review 1: While some of the stories immediately captured my attention, some of the stories left me slightly bewildered as they often relied heavily on the style or the content of the story they were parodying in order to be clever or creepy. Is the fact that I didn't enjoy some stories as much as I could the fault of the authors or mine for not having read some of these classic pieces? A litte of both perhaps. But it would be good to note that I did enjoy the book, and now I have a whole new set of books on my mental to read list. Yay!
review 2: Neil Gaiman's retelling of Sleepy Beauty was as dark, nuanced, and brilliant as I imagined it would be. Unfortunately far too many other stories here fall into a unimaginative dystopian rut that just comes off as vague and unins
... morepired. I had high hopes for an update of The Monkey's Paw, but was left with a story that grasped for futurism. An unfocused exposition and transparent plot line pays little homage to one of the first true horror stories. There were a few I didn't get to read in this, and I would love to delve deeper. I think this is a smart endeavor. I encourage folks to read these stories, but also track down their inspiration and judge for yourselves. less
