review 1: Okay, so, I LOVED this book. When I first started it, I wasn't sure how much I would like it, but I decided to give it a chance. This book starts out with one of Holly's memories of her Italian grandmother, Camilla. Her grandmother tells her that Holly's true love will love the Italian dish, sa cordula (basically lamb intestines). This leaves Holly skeptical that she will ever find love. After her beloved grandmother passes away and leaves Holly with the responsibility of caring for her shop as well as teaching an Italian cooking class, Holly must face her fear and gain a little confidence to keep her grandmother's legacy alive.I won't spoil the book, but throughout the story, Holly has ups and downs, but she can always calm down and regain her peace in her grandmother... more's kitchen, as well as through her recipes. Long after her grandmother is gone, Holly still finds comfort in her recipes as well as her diary. This book reminded me of my relationship with my own grandmother. We were always super close, and I loved to cook with her, because she was amazing at it.This book has everything that I was looking for: family, love, friendship, a little drama, and a lot of good food. The delicious recipes they talk about throughout the book are ever included, so I may be trying those soon.
review 2: This was an enjoyable read, and easy to get into from the start. I love books about romance and magic and cooking, so it wasn't a hard sell! Senate's characters were loveable and interesting, and the story itself was comfortably familiar, yet contained enough twists and turns to keep me wondering how things would end up. I loved how the author portrayed Mia, as a smart, yet unmistakeably young woman, with a good sense of herself and an easy way around adults, but who is still clearly a child with a child's misunderstandings and vulnerability and belief and hope. I did think a few things slightly contrived: Forgive me if this element is true to life, but I've never known somebody who kept a diary, but only ever wrote 4 entries in it -- entries whose dates were months and/or decades apart, whose narrative spanned months but that were clearly written after the fact as if from a novelist's omniscient perspective, and were written just so to address the specific themes demanded by the intended reader of said diary. So, while I was interested in the character and events behind said diary, it did not succeed in keeping my disbelief suspended. Note: Unfortunately, the edition I read was not the best edited, with typos that could have been fixed by a line editor, and not a few that I'm sure would have been caught by the grammar-editing spellcheck of my word processor. I had the sense that if an editor had taken this work on with a little more care, the book's excitement factor could have been amped up by cleaning up the repetitive thought processes and descriptions that occasionally occurred from scene to scene, and by pointing out untidy plot holes (what ended up happening with the rival, Avery Windermere?) to the author to be tied up. less

This is what chick lit is supposed to be. Funny, romantic, fast. Bonus, easy recipes!
