review 1: My Amish Boyfriend by Melody Carlson***Shannon McNamara is 16 and has plans for her summer break. However, her plans are suddenly changed when she is informed that she will be taking a bus with her ill mother to her grandparents home in Hochstetler, Ohio. Grandparents that up to this moment she never knew anything about. On top of that information, she learns that they are Amish and her mother was raised Amish but left years ago. Stunned, Shannon prepares for the long trip making sure she packs to keep her mother as comfortable as she can on the bus. Shannon finds things at her grandparents home strained, not realizing that when her mother left she was shunned. Not long after arriving, she meets a neighbor Amish boy, Ezra Troyer and soon has a crush on him. In fact, ... moreshe thinks she is in love with him. They both are struggling with where they belong and what they are to do with the rest of their lives. Ezra has plans to leave and Shannon is seriously thinking of joining the Amish community. It is soon apparent that Shanon's mother is more ill than they first thought. She takes her to a local doctor who feels her mother has been misdiagnosed and runs tests on her. These test show some scary results and Shannon has to make some very grown-up decisions. The relationship between Shannon and Ezra seems to move a little too fast. Other teen issues are addressed in the story: courtship and dating, relationships, love and faith.~~I received a copy of this book from Bookfun Network for my review~~
review 2: My Amish Boyfriend by author Melody Carlson is a great book for your teenage daughter, but I'm willing to bet mom's will enjoy it as well.Shannon McNamara is a young girl who has great plans for the summer. She wants to get her driver's license, a job and a tattoo. But her mother is very ill, so ill in fact that a decision has been made to go and recover at her parent's house in Ohio. Parents Shannon has never met. Amish parents. As if this revelation isn't enough for Shannon, who thought she knew everything about her mother, when she meets her new grandparents and her new aunts, uncles and cousins she isn't prepared for the overwhelming culture shock. Forced to placate her relatives sensibilities she begins to dress Amish and dives into all rules and the chores that come with the "simple life."When Shannon meets Ezra she starts to consider becoming Amish permanently. But is she choosing love over God to get closer to a guy? Or will she find out what real faith is? As Shannon's mother continues to deteriorate she gets her answers and more. The author has managed to capture the feelings and experiences most teenagers go through - that first crush followed by the angst that goes with it. On top of it all, Shannon is dealing with the very real threat of losing her mother to an illness that is wasting her away. I like the way the author shows Shannon's maturity in dealing with the aspect of the child becoming the parent and the parent the child. She also grapples with Shannon's own lack of faith during a time when she really needs to start trusting in God.I enjoyed this book and if you like Amish fiction, I believe you will too. I give it 5/5 stars. less
