review 1: I liked this second book by Haskell even better. I would give it a 3.5 rating. It's pleasant to watch a good writer grow. I especially enjoyed the medieval Germanic setting and again, the main character girl. The supporting characters were also very good and they developed and changed over the course of the book, just as the the protagonist did. I liked the angle Haskell took on dragons, Fafnir and his descendants. And I appreciated the things the protagonist learns about herself and her responsibilities. Perhaps a faint echo of Eustace in C.S. Lewis' The Voyage of the Dawn Treader here?

Tilda is a tough girl, with a splayfoot and her own maid, who happens into some interesting situations involving dragons. Her growth is organic and the story is engaging and really about dragons and adventure more than anything. less
