review 1: I imagine there are quite a few books out there that are intended to help older siblings be OK with the invasion of their home by a messy, rambunctious little brother or sister. Chloe, Instead is this type of book - and it's wonderful! The thoughtful writing tells us a short, sweet story of all the ups and downs of having a troublesome toddler around the house. They get into everything, they mess with your stuff, they won't leave you alone - yet at the end of the day, you can't help but love them. My favorite part of the text is how this book sort of centers around the older sister's keyboard and her desire to be left alone to practice her music. Thus, the keyboard becomes the main source of conflict but then it also resolves the big argument when the older sister encou... morerages Chloe to come and dance to her music. The two girls then have a blast together. After all, like most toddlers, Chloe LOVES to dance. We have a 7 y/o girl and a 3 y/o boy in our house and there are certainly some arguments from time to time. But our kids, like Chloe and her big sister, can always bond over music and dancing - which is why Chloe, Instead was a particularly poignant book for us.As for the artwork - I definitely dug the bright, bold, dazzling colors in the illustrations. Plenty of brilliant oranges, hot pinks and cool blues. The two girls are cutely drawn with big oval heads and huge round eyes, a la the Powderpuff Girls. And when it comes time to illustrate Chloe dancing fast, slow, high and low - we can truly feel her energy and excitement as she moves and grooves! And of course there is a truly heart-warming illustration at the end that leaves you all warm and fuzzy inside as Chloe climbs into bed with her big sister and the two fall asleep with little grins on their faces. A soothing "Awwwwww" moment to end the book perfectly.Chloe, Instead has outstanding, concise writing and joyful, exciting illustrations. It's a beautiful book that any sisters would love to have and share together over and over.
review 2: An extremely bright picture book about the pitfalls of getting a new sister. Chloe is a lot of fun and it just takes her older sister a little while to realize that while things may not be perfect, they are still pretty great. I loved the colors and style of this books illustrations. Very short sentences (although a couple of weird breaks) make this book for younger readers and possibly story time appropriate. less
