review 1: If I remember correctly I saw an interview in the back of book pages at library for this book.It was better then I thought it be based on the cover and interview.I did read this with my 32 month old daughter who really didn't seem all the interested except maybe when she noticed the balloons. I'll be honest I started losing interested when they started planting things and building playgrounds.I think if my mom's ex's daughter was a little younger this book would be perfect for her since her father is a junk man.I never really seen a dump/junkyard clean up and turn into anything like a community garden or playground.
review 2: “Junkyard” by Michael Austin is a story about two robots that before being able to build something nice must first clean junkyard; a
... more story with two complete opposites from which the author managed to make nice combination. The story will start when two big robots found themselves among the vast amount of garbage that is everywhere around them. And although their task seems almost impossible, two of them will get to work – cleaning, eating, devouring and drinking enormous amounts of various wastes that someone dismissed. When their job will be successfully finished, follows the twist when these two destroyers are converted to creators – they built the playground, bike trails, and gardens, dig out a lake and planted numerous beautiful flowers and trees. And when young reader will pass the 40-page book in a place where there used to be dirty junkyard, now there is a wonderful place to play…Michael Austin’s children book was created using an unusual combination of destruction and creation elements, and also brings a nice message that even for places for which we could never say that they can become beautiful when we make the effort it may become possible. With illustrations the author also has done a good job, he used illustrations full of details and colors that look great on white background. Therefore, this unusual book of contradictions, which celebrates the victory of life and the beauty over garbage and ugliness can be recommended for children to learn that anything, place or thing with hard work can be transformed into something enjoyable and beautiful. less
