review 1: This was a pretty cool idea and the story kept me on the hook with action and the anticipation of wondering what would happen next. The reason I can't really rate this any higher than 3 stars (maybe 3.5) is because it reads like a young adult novel. Much of the dialog seems forced and unnatural. I probably won't be reading the other series, but I can see why other people love them so much. I just can't get past the feeling that I'm reading a soap opera.
review 2: On first seeing this book, I thought it would be okay, just something to read and kind of rejuvenate my writing mind, but it surprised me. I'm thinking a Science Fiction book about the Amish is a bit of an oxymoron, but the author pulled it off really well. I don't think the exact date was ever given... more for the setting of the novella, but it's definitely three or four centuries in the future. The Amish are being crowded out by all the English (all us Americans who love our technology), so the main character is about to embark on a new pioneering voyage to a planet called New Pennsylvania. But things don't go to plan. And what he discovers in the end (from what I can understand) is a bit chilling.The ending is the only part I really am bothered by. It was a left a little too dubious. The best I can tell, when he was loaded in the shuttle to go to New Pennsylvania, he was really transported to a future world. That's the best I can understand. I think if the ending was a little more clear, I could give it 5-stars. I'm not sure if he has written any sequels as I only finished this book late last night, but I am going to try to find some just to see if the question is ever answered. less
