review 1: I did not like the book at all. Way too cynical for me. The characters were narrow and contrived. The plot was shallow and uninteresting. It read like the author had no idea where to go with the book and eventually it just ran away in a kind of convoluted manner and because there wasn't really any story> The cynicism took over and that's all there was. Okay. So it's a not very ethical business and the people who populate the higher echelons are immoral bastards. You still need a story and you need characters who are more than just weak, one dimensional egomaniacs. It was interesting to see Fareed Zacharia depicted as such an unlikable character. I wonder if that is true? Other than that, I can recommend the book. Too many really good books out there and too little time to ... moreread them all to spend time reading this one.
review 2: Hastings showed sarcastically how a rookie to survive in an old media establishment. How people are struggling with conscience in pursuit of a higher status in the press firm. How the old media to be influenced and reacted when facing the rushing wave of the new media. The novel has successfully grabbed my attention till the end with a bittersweet experience of a foreign correspondent during the time of Iraq war. less
