Spider’s Bite is not a Young Adult novel. Spider’s Bite is an Urban Fantasy, with Paranormal, Magic, Vampires and a Romantic twist. There are sex scenes in this book, and there are scenes involving blood, and murder.
I doubted that I would end up loving this novel. I borrowed Spider’s Bite from the library and read as part of my September’s TBR. My thoughts on what would happen in this book were incredibly low. I didn’t want to get myself too hyped up since there was a likeness to another assassin a lot of us would know about.
So by the time that I finished reading Spider’s Bite, I was very glad that I had kept my expectations of this novel low. I ended up enjoying Spider’s Bite (SB). I really did. It wasn’t until I actually started reading SB that I found out that there was a fantasy element to this novel.
Gin is actually a very caring character. She loves the people that she is close to, and those that she chooses to work for — it’s very clear to me. I liked that we saw the character change within Gin. We first see her as a caring human being, turn into this person who is fuelled by revenge and anger.
Gin is honestly a badass character. We know she’s an assassin and see her (read her??) while she’s working. We know that she cares deeply for those she cares about, and honestly stands up (in her own way) for the people who need to be protected in her corrupted city.
I didn’t think that I would end up liking this book — and I don’t really know why. I loved Estep’s Young Adult series. The writing in Spider’s Bite picked me up and carried me to another world where there are people, families, with these elemental powers. And there are people who don’t have these powers. There are also Vampires in this world, as well as other creatures. I honestly really enjoyed reading Spider’s Bite. If my library has the second book in the Elemental Assassin series, I’ll be reading it.
