review 1: I hesitatingly recommend this well-written guide to expanding one's influence through today's most popular media. I appreciate the author's candor: he transparently points out stupid mistakes, and he doesn't make it look easy. Nevertheless, he leaves one wondering why we have been sleeping under a rock for so long, when there are so many simple, common-sense steps that can be taken. This is why I recommend it: I know many Christian leaders who could and should be doing far more to reach out to those around them in the language and media of the day. I hesitate for three reasons. First, as the subtitle reveals, this book can easily serve to help boost the ego of us glory-hogs, if we're not careful. Second, because of its focus on contemporary technology, this book will becom... moree dated quickly. Third, like organic foods, if everyone does it, then no one can, for the demand will eclipse the supply. That is, if everyone builds a platform to get noticed in a noisy world, it will just create more (and louder) noise. In the meantime, I - and many like me - have much to learn, and for the present, this book is both an excellent reference and inspiration.
review 2: There's a lot of good information in this book. Very practical tips that you can apply at whatever stage you may be at in your platform-building, especially if you're a beginner or intermediate. Many of the chapters are adapted from Hyatt's blog, and they read like it - short, to the point, easy to grasp, with short numbered lists. That's a great feature. Some of the advice won't apply to everyone, though. So when you read this book, do it knowing that you'll glean some useful ideas from certain sections, while other sections may not have any relation to what you're doing online to build your brand or business. In some places, the information is definitely geared toward beginners, but this isn't true of the entire book. I do think intermediate platform-builders like me can benefit from this book, but if you're already doing quite well on platform, I'd bet you're already doing most of what this book suggests - and that means this book wouldn't be for you. less
