review 1: Published in 2012 this is not the only children's picture book of this title or this subject. It's as common as diapers on a toddler. "I'm bored!" is that heavily sighed announcement which every child has said and every parent has endured. My usual answer is to give them something useful to do. I haven't read all of the other books of similar subject or title, so I'm at a loss to compare. But I'm sure this little gem by Michael Ian Black has something the other books lack. A Potato. What is more boring, uninteresting, and dull than a russet potato? It's not even baked. A little girl is all alone with nothing to do, until she meets the potato and invites him to play. He is unimpressed with all her ideas. As she tries to thrill the potato, he grows more and more uni... morentersted.Digitally rendered the simple illustrations are on a white page with no background, each picture has the feeling of a handmade linocut. It's not a masterpiece of art, but it's friendly and very expressive. Half of the reading in the book is in the little girl's and the potato's facial expressions. There is not actually a lot of reading in the book. It's short. It feels short. There are only a few sentences on most pages and some pages only have one word. It's not that this writing is unsuited for the story, because it's not only appropriate but it's kind of cute. It is simply that the entire style is meant for no more than four minutes of quite time and not much else. This is a one joke book, not a bedtime story. I would check it out from the library. I would read it to preschoolers and kindergartners. It might even be great to couple with an activity of making a list of things to for when we are bored. But "I'm Bored," is not a bedtime story and and I wouldn't buy it for my shelf.
review 2: Just in time for the summer avalanche of "Mom, I'm bored!" I have found a book that I will certainly be sharing with my friends with children making that complaint. It starts with a child complaining of boredom. The child is at first excited by the find of a potato but promptly declares it boring. The potato, in turn, pronounces the child as boring. The child then explains various things that a child can do, but all the while the potato is passing judgement and requiring the child to come up with more and more exciting things. It is a cute but heavy-handed rebuke to the "I'm bored" syndrome (Yes, I know the heavy-handed part is necessary - my own mother used to just look at me and say "I'll find you something to do..." followed by a list of chores). less

My 5 year old enjoyed reading this book. It was funny how each character ended up being bored.
