review 1: Last year, I took a chance and used a monthly audible credit on a book called Theft of Swords. I'm glad I did. I devoured it, and it's two sequels. Fantastic story, great characters, and I was happy with the way it ended. Then I found out Mr Sullivan was writing a prequel. I was excited and worried that it wouldn't live up to the previous books. I needn't have worried. Again, we have a terrific origin story of how Royce and Hadrian met and formed their partnership. It's certainly nothing we haven't seen before. Two characters who hate each other and thrust together and by the end of the book have some sort of mutual respect. But again the characters are just so good, I just couldn't put it down. We also have the origin story of Gwen, which I thought would not be... more as interesting but found myself enjoying it a lot. Thank goodness the sequel to this comes out next month.
review 2: A great prequel to the Riyria Revelations reveals how Royce and Hadrian first met. Some of it is traditional "guys hate each other until they begrudgingly mutually respect each other and then form a bond" trope that is found in a myriad of fictional works, but I didn't mind it. What was really interesting to me is that those seeds from Heir of Novron are planted so early. Arcadius comes across as being very calculating in that regard. It was interesting to see things from Gwen's perspective, nice to have the book pass the Bechdel Test if nothing else. Crown Tower is almost entirely from Hadrian's perspective which is also different. It was good to get some background. In all, good banter, nice revisiting of characters, a worthy prequel. I really enjoy Royce and Hadrian's chemistry, my only complaint is that they weren't formally introduced until well into the book. less
