review 1: Not too bad, but not great. The genre references are pretty relentless, and can feel intrusive in the beginning. I felt like they backed off later in the book, or I just got used to it. If you're not from the "geek" world, you will definitely be lost and hate this book. I only detected one error that comes to mind, but then, I didn't know every single reference--just most of them. Conclusion: quick mildly entertaining little novel for the right person.
review 2: This book is a total guilty pleasure. If you take Ready Player One, change the 80s pop culture to more general geekdom, scale it by an order of magnitude, and change the setting from dystopia to urban fantasy, then you'll end up with this book. My biggest problem with this book is that some of the thing
... mores the main character ends up doing in the book are totally ridiculous. Even if they're awesome, they're still ridiculous. It does sort of feel like it's self-indulging fantasy, but I like it. I feel bad recommending it to friends, but I have. I guess that's what makes it a guilty pleasure. less

Unable to finish. A really interesting premise, but the storytelling leaves a lot to be desired.

He tries a bit too hard. A lot of fun references, but it comes across as forced.
