review 1: The title is misleading. There really didn't seem that EB White was all that eccentric. He was a a great author who took some time to develop his craft and vision, and to meet a life companion. When he did, the results were amazing. His other tremendous contribution, of which I had been unaware before reading this book, was to New Yorker magazine. What emerges in this portrait is a very profound role in American writing in the 20th century. The book is a very thoughtful and sympathetic biography and a pleasure to read.
review 2: Have to say I was bored for the first half, which in my opinion would have been better condensed (nothing much exciting happens in White's life, not a lot of conflict or tension, and Sims is a competent writer but not the kind of stel
... morelar that would make many pages of this stuff entertaining). Sims does a great job of the second half though, explaining how White came up with, researched, and revised and revised the ideas and words that would become Charlotte's Web. I couldn't stop listening to this part. Wannabe writers should check this out -- always helpful to see how literary giants wrestled with their fledgling words and felt that they were inadequate to the task! Narration was fine. less

A lovely introduction to an American classic, both the man and the book.
