review 1: Michaela MacColl takes two classic authors, the Bronte sisters, and using biographical research creates a fictional portrayal of their lives. In this historical mystery set in the moors of their home,Haworth England, the author draws from the gothic tradition to create a story that is full of horror and romanticism. Emily is a daring and headstrong young woman; while Charlotte is practical and responsible. Often at odds with each other they must come together to solve a mystery. On her way home from school Charlotte is stopped by a mysterious woman in need of help. A dashing stranger claims the woman before Charlotte can do anything. However, Charlotte can't forget the woman. Meanwhile, at home, someone has been trying to break in the parsonage and their brother Branwell i... mores acting oddly distant. While on a walk in the moors, Emily encounters a handsome stranger. Who is he and want does he want? Who is the mysterious woman and is she really in trouble? Who is trying to break in the parsonage? Why is Branwell acting strange? Lots of questions that need answers and they need to do it before someone gets hurt. MacColl kindles the gothic romances of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre in this intricately plotted, suspenseful and haunting mystery. The strong sense of place is vital to the story and reflects the awe and terror that the characters experience. Ever the authors the story acts as inspiration for the Brontes real life novels. Words, atmosphere, and scenes that are reflective of their novels are present throughout the book as the girls both write and live their stories. After reading Always Emily, it is difficult not to imagine Emily and Charlotte running across the moors meeting mysterious strangers, solving mysteries, and writing it all down. Highly recommended for fans of the Bronte sisters and historical mysteries.
review 2: This was a fun look into the early years of several of my favorite authors (the Bronte sisters are timeless). While it is historical fiction, it has some great background info from the author about the early years of the Bronte sisters, that it feels like it really could have happened. Good writing and realistic background/setting make this a great read for those of us who loved this era and the young heroines who didn't want to fit the mold of what a young lady can and cannot do. less
