review 1: Beryl and her father Capitan Clutterbuck reside in East British Africa. Beryl is a young girl who is all too curious for a six year old in Nairobi, Kenya. Capitan Clutterbuck was an ex-military man who began to breed and race horses. The horse and mill farm was all Beryl knew and was her father’s best rider and trainer. Besides working on the farm Beryl spent a lot of time with the Nandi tribe in hopes to become a warrior; this is where she meets her best friend Kiibi who is also a toto with the Nandi tribe. Even though Beryl is a white English woman she does not seem to care, she would much rather be a warrior than a lady. Where ever Beryl goes trouble seems to follow, Beryl has many close calls with death but always sticks through. This drives her father crazy, he hire... mores Emma to take care of the house and watch over Beryl, but that only makes matters worse as Beryl rebels. After a mishap with a new teacher brought in, and using her warrior skills against a Nandi boy Beryl is sent off to a boarding for a year. Beryl hates the idea of being restricted in a dress and tight shoes, after Beryl has completed her schooling she is no longer a little girl anymore. Simultaneously as the book progresses, we see journal entries and interviews from and by Beryl. These account for the record breaking flight she makes from England to North America; Beryl is never afraid of a challenge.
review 2: I have to say that this was a lot better than expected. I am just kinda sad that she really didn't tell us about the progress of her actually becoming a pilot. Arap Maina was amazing! (at least.. I think that's how you spell his name right now) Kiibi was funny.. haha, I loved him! I am happy she didn't put romance between the two cause they are only about like 12. Her dad seems like a strange guy, but I can see in the end that he was a lot more caring. Emma amused me... Arthur too haha! less
