review 1: I really, really loved this book. It was such a fantastic mix of fiction and non-fiction and of historical and modern day fiction. It was also a book set in Paris, about antique art and furniture, so it was checking a lot of my boxes. I loved how the author took the real life story of Marthe de Florian and her apartment and created a very engaging character (be warned that a good bit of the story of Marthe in the book is fiction). I equally enjoyed and was engaged with the modern day story and personage too. There were so many twists and turns it was difficult to know what would happen and how things would play out in the end. Its unpredictability made it very difficult to put it down and walk away from it. My only criticism, and probably the only reason this book i... moresn't going on my favorites shelf, is that I think there were a few too many twists and turns in the story. I felt that because so many issues and problems were faced and discussed it was impossible to feel like they had full, good conclusions (but I guess isn't that really how life is sometimes?). Also, I'm a terrible romantic at heart, so I found the ending to be very unsatisfying. All that being said, I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone with a love of Paris, art, historical fiction and books with strong female protagonists, because this book has it all.
review 2: Based on the story of a Paris apartment that sat empty for 70 years and the treasures it contained, this would have made a really interesting nonfiction book. Instead, Michelle Gable got ahold of it and turned it into a novel featuring a furniture expert from an auction house getting caught up in the diaries of the former owner of the apartment. Paris of the Belle Epoque is seen in flashback sections through the diary. The nuggets that are true are fascinating, but the rest of the story is superficial, and April, the furniture expert, is one of the most annoying, unsympathetic characters I've read in a long time. less
