The Undrowned Child
review 1: The Undrowned Child is definitely a book that requires patience. When I first picked up the book, I was unsure whether it was worth the read or not, it was the inside of the book cover that sold me:"Teo is subsumed into a world in which salty-tongued mermaids run subversive printing presses, ghosts good and bad patrol the streets, statues speak, rats read and librarians turn fluidly into cats."The book took a while to get into as the first quarter or so of it was spent introducing us to weird creatures and other things Teo sees, slightly annoying characters and the wonder that is Venice. The only real motivation to read being the desire to know where everything links up. It also felt much like a children's book despite the sophisticated and beautiful writing style.However,... more when I did get into the book (which was as soon as Renzo introduced himself)I really, really loved it! I quickly grew to love the two characters and all the weird creatures they came into contact with. The writers imagination and her absolute love for Venice makes this book a truly enjoyable read. Once you get used to the creatures and get far enough in the story to have everything come together in your head, the story just flows. The book even had me laughing out loud and smiling to myself :)I wouldn't mind picking this book up again.
review 2: At first it looked like this book had EVERYTHING. I picked it up in the library, saw the cover, read it was about MERMAIDS and Venice and magic and dark stuff, had a love story and an awesome heroine... you know how it goes. So I started reading and at first it really was everything I could want from a book. But then... I can't explain it. It was too full of everything. The whole book was a giant twist. Or maybe a pile of smaller twists. A really giant pile. Full of unnecessary crap. I had a lot of trouble understanding what the heck was going on. I should have read it in one piece because when I picked it up again, I understood absolutely nothing. My attention started wandering, I skipped pages and I just couldn't get sucked into the story again. It's a shame, because this isn't a bad book and the mermaids (the most important stuff for me) were brilliant. Theo was a great character and even though I didn't like Renzo very much, he grew on me too. Oh, and the cat lady rocked. less

This may be a novel for children or young adults but it is an enjoyable read for the young at heart.
