review 1: In the year 1899, Venice is seeing some unprecedented natural disasters. The waters around Venice are heating up and now sharks are prowling the lagoon. And children are dying from a mysterious plague. When Teo and her parents travel to Venice to help, Teo meets a young Venetian boy and the two of them set out to try to solve the mystery of why Venice seems to be under attack. They get help from a tattooed cat, mermaids, and other magical creatures. Just what is Teo’s connection to all of this?
review 2: I adore the world building and the historical aspects; but despite the flaws, what really had me enchanted were the characters, rich and engaging, edging you on for more even when the story didn't feel it wanted to be as good as its key players, or narra... moretion; I dislike Maria, but I think its very good she goes beyond a stereotype; Teo is good; the villain is reasonable; the side characters excellent, and Renzo just a wonder - and this is also the second book Lovric actually had me like the romance (I love the book of human skin as well, though more than a little more) the only possible criticism of the characters is how there age seems a bit unnatural for their characters, but thats a nitpick - If you love rich reading that isn't too laborious, and glimmers like the Venetian sea; this is a must. less
