review 1: I loved this story, for some reason, it reminds me of In the Flesh by Livia Dare. The story was beautiful and well planned. However, the ending was so rushed, it ruined the elegance of the rest of the story. This story cemented my opinion that Michelle Pillow is one of the best authors around. The story starts off with Ulyssa getting kidnapped. King Attor wants her for his harem. However, before be beds her, he dies. His eldest son, Kirill, takes over as king. They meet when she accidentally wanders into his chambers after looking for an exit. They have an instant attraction, but he doesn't want to bed her because she is drunk. She is there because the medical mafia lord was on that planet. When his daughter kills the mafia lord, Ulyssa's mission is over. She was an underc... moreover agent for the Agency. When she accidentally declares herself as the king's woman, she is tied to the king's bed by his brother. Because of her words, she basically told people that the king has chosen her as his first mistress. The king's brothers notice how she has a calming effect on Kirill. However, she is not submissive and it causes issue with Attor's closest advisor. She is prisoned to the king's quarters for two weeks as punishment. When she gets our after two weeks, the king's brother, Falke, helps her learn sword fighting because she is bored. One day, she finds a sale agreement between with the mafia lord on Kirill's desk. She suspects him of trying to kill the enemy kingdom with the biological weapon even though he previously stated that he is not his father and wants peace between the two countries. She runs away to try to warn the other country. However, she has already fallen in love with Kirill. When she faints in front of the enemy royals, she finds out she is pregnant. The royals from both kingdoms come to a truce to find the biological weapons. They find out it is in Attor's closest advisor's land. They contact the Agency to dismantle the chemical. Ulyssa leaves with them. From a recording of her whispered words, Kirill finds out she loves him and he loves her. He calls for her arrest. She is caught because she was on the island again to get his gift to her, his mother's necklace. He confesses his love. She confesses he fears that he will be with other women. He promises monogamy and makes her his queen.
review 2: I really loved the concept of this book, but I was extremely disappointed w/ the execution. I had to force myself to read the entire book. There were just too many petty, childish conflicts & terribly poor character development. The eBook wasn't edited well and I had to guess at what the author was trying to convey several times. Not the author's fault, I know, but very distracting nonetheless. I seriously wanted to punch Ulyssa in the throat. She acted like a spoiled, whiny, teenager. I love Alpha Males nearly as much as I hate bratty heroines. I didn't find Kirill's actions to be as awful as Ulyssa tried to make them. The "banter" between the H&H was boring, repetitive, and not witty. I really appreciate a heroine w/ a great sense of humor, sass, & quick wit. I just found Ulyssa lacking those qualities. She came across as bitchy & vindictive without an actual reason to act that way. I'm not sure if I will pick up the rest of the series or not, although Quinn has mildly piqued my curiosity. I'm sort of baffled by the higher ratings of this book, but "different strokes for different folks," right? less
