review 1: First of all I enjoyed reading this book because of its plot and the characters. At the beginning I had kind of problems with the protagonist Jack and didn't like his personality and character, but when it was time for him to stay alone in Norway I enjoyed reading about Jack's feelings and his fears. Besides I loved the way the scenery and loneliness of the main character were described by Michelle Paver and the relationship between Jack and Gus. In my opinion the book was thrilling until end and I would have never expected it to be so dramatic and sad sometimes. Moreover I liked the way the book was written with the diary entries of Jack all the time. The only things I dislike are the monotony (that Jack or the whole group didn't leave the place or perhaps had a battle wi... moreth a bear or whatever) and that the book was too short to build a relationship with the major supporting roles. All in all it was a refreshing book and I would definitely recommend it.
review 2: A terrific read; most of the story takes place on a former mining-island in the Barents Sea and the stark isolation of this world is beautifully evoked. Our hero Jack is a ball of self-loathing, but we empathise with him and his motivations are slowly brought to light via the device of the Journal as he deals with the increasingly malevolent, ambiguous threat of the "Great Stillness Outside". Genuinely creepy and surprisingly; also ultimately moving. less
