review 1: This was an excellent purchase. I don't like single-issue comics--too easy to damage, not great for re-reading--so I look for the graphic-novel bound versions as a rule. I'd read the books contained in this larger volume, but this compilation is even better because it contains some extra material and makes it easier to keep track of the story. This is important because the Plague of Frogs series is fairly complicated, if also fairly linear. It's a dark, archetypal fantasy story, with art that stays true to the Mignola original concepts even though it's executed by several other artists. The B.P.R.D. series continues to develop characters from the original Hellboy books as well as adding new ones (I like Roger the homunculus very much) and this expanded collection makes the... more "novel" part of graphic novel seem particularly apt.
review 2: Collects the first three trade paper backs of B.P.R.D. The first and last stories are by far the strongest, and some of the best Hellboy/BPRD stories I've ever read. "Hollow Earth" re-establishes the B.P.R.D. team (Abe, Liz, Roger, Dr. Kate, and new guy Johann) after Hellboy's departure. I appreciate the way Mignola works to build team dynamics and character relationships here. The multi-part "Plague of Frogs" story that closes this volume officially kicks off the Frog Monsters arc in tense, exciting, surprisingly horrific style. I've already read some of the later Frog Monsters stories, so it was fun and useful to find out how it all started. The Frog Monsters are great villains: smart, mysterious, and totally relentless. In between "Hollow Earth" and "Plague of Frogs" is a mixed bag of shorter stories. General rule of thumb: the ones co-scripted by Mignola are essential, the ones written by other guys are fun but skippable. less

A fantastic read. Stories are interesting, art is wonderful, and the package itself is a beast.
