review 2: I meant to read just a few stories of this last night. It's all short stories, I figured there would be easy stopping points. And there were. Plenty of them. This book contains a variety of short tales, a few of them containing key bits of info about Hellboy (including his origin, tidbits about his right hand, how he came to shoot out Baba Yaga's ey
... moree) but most of them just featuring Hellboy's adventures from the '50s on as he dealt with a variety of folklorical menaces. But they are all so good that I couldn't put the book down, even though I'd read these stories before. "The Wolves of St. August" is a particular favorite of mine, "The Corpse" is widely regarded as one of Mignola's best, the three-page "Pancakes" story is clever, funny and a great use of limited space, and there are any number of stories like that here. Whether they're a little longer form, from a 22-page comic, or 2-page installments from various anthologies and projects, sometimes stitched together with new material, these are some of the best Hellboy stories. Both Scott Allie (in his intro) and Mike Mignola (in his outro) talk about how Mignola likes short stories, and it's clear that in addition to a fondness for the form, he's got a mastery of it.In addition, these Library editions are just amazing to look at. I've always talked about a fondness for oversized hardcovers, but like DC's Absolutes, these gems make most deluxe oversized hardcovers look about as fancy as a regular trade. Excellent production values, beautiful color and a satisfying to the touch cloth cover, not to mention that it fits right alongside the Art of Hellboy? It's a format whore's dream. less
