review 1: A Dreadful Murder is the retelling of a real murder that happened in 1908 in Kent. The victim was Caroline Luard a wealthy woman. The main suspect locally was her husband. Minette Walters retelling the crime using facts gathered at the time and investigates the story with her own imagination. As the crime remains unsolved her theory is valid one. I really enjoyed this book in the Quick Reads series. It was a seamless mix of actual facts and author supposition that brought the scene, detective knowledge available in 1908, and the human elements of the case all alive in just 129 pages.
review 2: A Dreadful Murder: The Mysterious Death of Caroline Luard is a novella in the QuickReads series by bestselling British author, Minette Walters. Walters takes the facts su
... morerrounding the 1908 murder, in Kent, England, of Caroline Luard and constructs a very plausible story of what might have happened. Walters also captures the feel of the era very well. This is the idea behind James Patterson’s Murder of King Tut and Patricia Cornwell’s Jack the Ripper, but Walters does an infinitely better job in this novella than either of those authors did in their books. Walters’ previous QuickReads edition, Chickenfeed, was just as expertly constructed. An interesting read. less
