review 1: This book will teach you about recursion, pattern matching, guards, monoids, and a handful of things that you couldn't find on a imperative language...If you want to learn Haskell...this book is definitely for you...written with lots of humor and great examples it makes learning Haskell a real joy...I would recommend it a 100%...With lots of humor and multiple examples, this is a must read book for anyone willing to learn Haskell...
review 2: I am currently reading the book.I have tried to read several books and tutorials on haskell, and this is one of the best of them. The explanations are clear through most of the book. Some areas become harder to understand towards the later chapters though. The book was a smooth read until I reached the chapter where functo
... morers and applicative functors are explained. At this point I had to re-read the chapter several times, and re-read previous chapters to understand what exactly functors do and what Maybe and Just types are. It is hard to understand the examples on these chapters if one's grasp on these are shaky. After several re-reads, I have felt the need to use other sources to try to understand some of the concepts.Normally having to use o ther sources signals a failure in the book, especially for instructional books like this one. But I still believe this is a good book. The concepts around functors and monads in Haskell borrow heavily from category theory. Category theory ideas can be harder to grasp if one hasn't been exposed to them before. As it is, Miran provides a good road map to learn about these concepts, yet reading some introductory essays on wikipedia and sources will help a lot in the understanding of functors and monads, or at least that is my plan. less
