review 1: When fifteen-year-old Lydia Pasternak’s popular older brother Danny disappears late one summer night, she finds herself a celebrity at school and neglected by her parents. Lydia spends the months between her brother's disappearance and his body's discovery staying out of her grieving parents' way, trying to impress the private detective they hire and coming to grips with her new image at school. Very depressing not only in the subject matter but in the cruel description of life in American high schools.
review 2: This is the type of book that strikes the rare combination of can't-put-it-down yet it lacks a lot of (unnecessary) crazy twists in plot. The main character is astute, funny, and flawed and I was drawn in by both her initial ambivalence and pain. E... morevery character is so completely drawn, and despite the dark nature of the subject matter, I was drawn in to the last page (which was sad and devastating and lovely all at once).Really, just an amazing debut novel. less
