NEW MUSIC: Onra – No Question ft. Pomrad

Onra goes city pop with his latest track, No Question! (audio)

For those of you blissfully unaware, sometime in the 80’s thanks to people like Yamashita Tatsuro, a genre of music was born that would retroactively be termed “city pop”. For all intents and purposes, it has the same sort of synthetic gleam as 80’s boogie in the states, but it’s focus is more on pop rather than funk, soul, and r&b. The main reason I mention this is that this new track “No Question” from Onra sounds a whole lot like a city pop track. Between those oh-so-cheesy-but-oh-so-good drums, the positively shimmering synth melodies (complete with a delightfully campy keyboard solo), and the almost throwback vocals that sit perfectly in the background in order to add the perfect amount of texture and detail, it really seems like Onra is taking back with this new track. And while I’ve heard enough city pop to last me a life time, Onra adds just enough of a twist to the sound to make want one more helping.

Onra’s latest album No One Has To Know is out on Feb. 16th. Head over to his Bandcamp to preorder!

Here’s an example of what most Japanese city pop fans would deem a classic track from the genre:
