review 1: After winning and enjoying Book 3 in the Edie Kiglatuk series through a Goodreads Giveaway I decided to go back and read the other books as well. White Heat starts off a bit slow but kicks in to high gear about a quarter of the way into the book. Edie, an expert hunter and hunting guide falls under scrutiny when one of the people she is leading on a hunting expedition ends up dead. Not long after this incident a personal tragedy rocks Edie's world and threatens her recently obtained sobriety. Edie must work to figure out the solutions to what happened on these two incidents in order to regain control of her life. What I like most about this series is the glimpse of Inuit culture. The mysteries are interesting and the rugged terrain is an additional character in these book... mores. The brutal cold, the months of darkness is as much a part of the story as its flesh and blood counterparts. Although at times I felt the scientific geology portions of the book were a bit much I did enjoy the book and look forward to Book 2 in this series.
review 2: It is the first one in the series, of which I had just read the 3rd volume and quite enjoyed it, so decided to start at the beginning. I was almost half-way through the book when I realized I had read it several months before. Great series, taking place primarily on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic, although this one also involves Greenland. Considerable history of northern life of the Inuit, as well as politics and current conditions, make it a lively read along with the mystery. less

A good mystery (but not great) and the Canadian Arctic setting is fascinating.
