review 1: So I liked the concept of a woman with slight magic ability living in the country and then this western vibe collides with steam punk concepts and crazy villains. I even highlighted parts I loved like her mouthing his words and taunting. I liked her character. Emily was sure of herself and tough. However...The whole book was one big time waiting for her to take control and be strong. Like have a special moment and she never did and somehow that ruined it. The unfolding of events too. I wanted to know who she was more than for her to be with anyone or solve the mystery of the star. So I won't read on but I liked it.
review 2: I am so sorry that this has been lingering at the very bottom of my kindle to-read list for over a year. I decided to read from the botto
... morem and this was the second one because the first one suck-diddly-ucked. (I'll save that for another review.)Anyway steampunk meets post Civil War meets witchiness. We have a poor country witch (Emily) who gets embroiled with a warlock (Dreadnaught Stanton - I'd kill to meet someone with that first name.)I loved the world building in this. There are zombie switches and three kinds of magic in the world and discussions about science versus magic.Cons: I had a slight urge to bitchslap the heroine, but I restrained myself. There was a slight overuse of a couple of trite formulas. But overall, this is one of the better books I've read lately and that's saying a lot. less

The Wild West, zombies, blood magic and monsters. What's not to love?
