The 1929 Series
review 1: This book was set in New York City and rural Massachusetts after the stock market crash and ensuing depression of 1929. This author is evidently loved by a large following of readers. There was way too much detailed romance; too much describing of the same places, people, thoughts and emotions; and there were too many grammatical errors. Yet I read about three couples, all young and beautiful, who went from riches to rags overnight. There was some mystery thrown in that made me want to read the next book of the series, which is what I am reading right now. The author has excellent pick up timing. I am not converting to dime novels. Anyway, these two books were free. Thank you, Mrs. Gardner, for a good read.
review 2: 1929 Jonathan's Cross is the story
... moreof three well-to-do couples, who lose everything, following the Stock Market Crash of 1929. This novel follows the struggles of this close-knit group of friends throughout the Great Depression. During this time, secrets are revealed that strain the relationships of these friends. However, they are able to work through these issues, and their support for each other is beyond admirable. The characters are well-developed, and I was able to identify personal characteristics of my own in each one of them. The thing that I find sad is that, due to today's technology and the lack of face-to-face interactions between people, it's unlikely that relationships such as these would exist, today. Despite the fact that this is one of the longest novels I've read, I found it refreshing, and I plan to read more novels by M.L. Gardner. less
