review 1: You've got to be kidding me!? That was the last thought I had when finishing this very long book. While I disagree with the reviewers that said it was poorly written, I completely agree that it lacked substance. A very long drawn out story that could easily be compiled into half the volume it is. Then I see that this is only book 1? Good God! The characters were so indistinguishable that even at the end of the story I was still mixing them up. Lots of potential was wasted here.
review 2: Roller coaster ride into high drama. Set in 1929, three couples confront the lost of the well-to-do life they've been living. Boyhood friends stay together through thick and thin; three wildly different personalities that complement each other in good times and bad--and t
... morehis book is about the bad. Their wives are as widely diverse as are the men and I enjoyed the development of several of the characters. Jonathan feels a heavy responsible for the lost of his brokerage that employs his buddies and their way of life; but more than that, extended friends and family who trusted him with their money--and he should. They manage to find a tenement to which they all escape, but the owner of the building has extremely violent feelings for both Jonathan and his wife extending from earlier mutual history. Jonathan has support from his former employees who provide Irish wisdom and street smarts, but it's not enough to keep him from continuing to sink into the depths of depression. Meanwhile, his buddy has managed to find the three of them jobs when most go begging, but the hard physical labor is another shock. The story continues to weave a tale of survival in one of the darkest periods of our country as dark secrets begin to emerge from Jonathan's past. The wives don't know everything about their husbands, though bits and pieces begin to emerge that tear at each individual in turn until it seems no one will come out unscathed--and indeed--not all do. less
