review 1: I was quite eager to read it as John Green has praised this book in a recent video. I liked the rise and fall of the main character, the life of a rural boy with big dreams who found a way to be rich through ANY means possible without any consideration of right or wrong, while his heart being set on the pretty girl. The book really showed that the things you desire most, somehow find a way to you but only at a time when you actually think you have lost them for good or when you have learnt to live without them. The story follows one's journey to death. I admire auther's descriptive imagery of the rising Asia however I felt the story to be typical but the Mohsin Hamid's style gave it a fresh outlook and an enchantingly beautiful narrative.
review 2: 'How to...' ... moreheeft niet die scherpte en drive die ik zo geweldig vond aan 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist', maar verder geen klagen. De roman verrast met zijn vorm (een zelfhulpboek) en stijl (de lezer en het hoofdpersonage worden voortdurend aangesproken met jij). Aanvankelijk vreesde ik voor een herhaling van het rags-to-richess-in-India type ('Slum Dog Millionaire', 'The White Tiger'), maar Hamid kijkt verder vooral dieper in zijn personages. less
