Viki’s review: The black tide by Keri Arthur

Though Winter Halo – the pharmaceutical company behind the evil experimentation on both children and adults – has been destroyed, the danger is far from over. Not only do seven children remain unaccounted for, but some of the vampires are now able walk in light.

The key to stopping the unthinkable lies in finding Ciara Dream, the last member of the trio behind the plot to give full light immunity to both the vampires and the Others. But Ciara, like Tiger herself, is a shapeshifter, able to take on any human form she desires.

To find her, Tiger will need to use every skill in her formidable arsenal, and even that might not be enough to save the city and the people she has started to care about.

Because the vampires are coming, and this time, the lights won’t stop them.

This is the last book of the Outcast series, if you didn’t read the previous books then this review can contain spoilers for you but anyway I recommend reading the series from the beginning, don’t start with The black tide because you won’t understand half of the things going on.

I was so excited for this one because I loved the rest of the series but at the same time I also was a bit reluctant since this is the last book in this world and I just didn’t want it to end. However I can’t really avoid the inevitable so my enthusiasm won out and I pretty much started it as soon as I got my hands on it. I really enjoyed it, still not as much as I did with City of light but it’s nevertheless the phenomenal read and quite an intense final book.

I think where this one shined and differed from the previous two books it the dynamism, the pace of the plot. It’s action packed and suspenseful, so much so that at times I wished that things slow down a bit so I can process the events. Generally in the previous books they investigated, carefully planned an attack and then gone through with it during the course of the story. Here? Well, here they accomplished so much in such a quick succession that I don’t think their enemies had time to realize what’s going on. They went in, wrecked havoc, came out and rinse and repeat. I liked that there was a lot of action and fights but I also think it was a bit too much at times. The balance between the time frame and the events just wasn’t perfect, I felt a bit overwhelmed especially when I finished the book. You ask me why? Because compared to the heightened emotional state and the stakes they had when it came to the final big fight it was pretty lackluster compared to what happened in the beginning of the book. All in all it’s a pretty intense and packed story with a lot of destruction going on. Still it’s not predictable at all, there are a lot of secrets finally revealed and the plot is ridden with twist.

What is certainly new here is the intensified and more openly displayed attraction and romantic feelings happening between Tiger and Jonas. I love them both, they are phenomenal characters and their personality developed a lot during the series but what I love most is how their feelings for each other progressed. Generally the books doesn’t have much romance to them expect some covert glances, and tender conversations but here it’s perfectly enough and satisfying. Although I’m a bit disappointed with changes the whole rift experience left them with, I was hoping for something bigger.

I loved this series and the best thing about it is the world building. The author always creates fantastic worlds but this one has an extra spin to it and I think it’s phenomenal and full of potential. I really liked to see more happening here because I think we only touched the edges of this society, maybe a spin-off series with little Raela?? Hmm??
This book gives a great conclusion to the conflict we get to know in the first book what I was a bit disappointed with was the epilogue. I would have loved one a little bit more farseeing, because my curiosity regarding how Jonas and Tiger relationship progresses after the small taste we got during the books is not at al satiated.
