review 1: In a formulaic genre, this book had an original twist: the female protagonist is an older trained courtesan and the male protagonist is inexperienced. It also had a decent mystery plot that surprised me so much at the end I had to turn back pages to get names right. What's more, this book it told mostly through the man's point of view, which is also unusual for romance novels. Though it wasn't my cup of tea story-wise, Burns is a really good romance writer, and her pacing was perfect. She harped a little too much on the characters' inner hesitations - and I read the word 'frisson' a little too often - but the originality makes up for all these flaws.
review 2: A refreshing romance between an aging courtesan and a much younger--and sexually inexperienced--bar
... moreon. I liked Garrick for his vulnerability, which stems from his abusive childhood background and secret physical condition. Watching him fall in love was endearing. Lady Ruth was a fine character as well; her sensitivity about aging was something with which I could relate; however, I was a getting annoyed with her constant whining about being too old for him. And for some reason, I kept getting the villains confused, which made it a little frustrating for me. Otherwise, while not exactly the most exciting, it's a decent tale if you enjoy the intricacies of the older woman/younger man relationship. 3.8 stars. less

Decent story with solid characters. However, I did not agree with one small detail at the end.
