review 1: Wow, how serendipitous that I just happened to grab this book off he bookshelf on our way to our Panama Canal trip - it so totally fit in with this trip because the story takes place right where we were traveling. I LOVED this book and even re-read it after I finished just because I loved it so much. The story of the father, his daughter, and his dog on a sailing trip from Trinidad to the Galápagos Islands was so beautiful and is one that I will not soon forget. The author's use of language, her characterization, everything was amazing! Very highly recommended!!
review 2: This follows the journey of a father, daughter and their dog in a grand sailing boat Romanay. The family from Trinidad experience loss in a flood that destroys their family home and lives as... more a result. The author herself has experience of this, her brothers home in Trinidad was ruined in the 2008 floods. On a whim, the father takes his daughter out of school and the pair sever ties from their homeland on a voyage across the oceans. From the Port of Spain they travel via the Panama canal to the Galapagos isles. It is a tale of self discovery, finding that zest for life again, the bond of family and the vastness/variance of the world. The book is rich in detail of the sights seen on their travels, particularly nature. Scuba dives, swimming with dolphins, seeing wild dolphins, monkeys, iguanas.... As colourful as the wildlife are the people they meet on their travels. less
