review 1: This book is set in Trinidad, and while we do see it through the lens of this European couple (George and Sabine) and their other expat acquaintances, I felt I learned at least something about this island and it's journey to independence. The use of real people interwoven into the story made sense as Sabine tried to make sense of her life on this island, a life she never wanted. I didn't really like the structure of the book and the way it ended in the middle, but there was plenty going on here that I did enjoy.
review 2: It's hard to sum up this novel, because there are so many parts to the story. It's a love story, an expected and an unexpected one, and neither is a very happy love story. It's a story of colonialism, racism, political upheaval, race relations
... more, changing leadership in a country, riots, family issues, self medication to ignore things going on around one's self, etc etc. As you can see, a lot of topics come into play. It's beautifully written, and is engaging. There are several parts to the story, which allows one to view things from the side of the husband, George, as well as his wife, Sabine. Sabine gets the last word in the novel, so while at first I sympathized more with her husband, by the end, my opinion had changed quite a bit. However, it's too complicated to simply choose a side and leave it at that. I would recommend this read to others. less
