review 1: This book, loaned to me by author, and colleague, Anne Bowman,has a setting of coastal Maine in the early 60's. As a person who has lived in Maine for 3 decades, I can appreciate the scenes and idiosyncrasies of "Mainers" depicted in this book.It delves into the simple, seemingly idyllic but more often hard lives, of an adolescent young lady, Florine, and her parents, and her Grandmother, among others, and the small town community they live in. But things quickly and absorbingly, change for Florine. Her mother simply disappears, her Father's life is upturned, and Florine experiences so many things that she can hardly bear the burden of it all. I won't go into the changes and experiences she has, as you must read it to find out, but it is well written and one can identify w... moreith so many conflicts of being a young lady in the early 60's, in addition to experiencing deep loss, conflicts of loyalty, small town idiosyncrasies, and Maine at it's most naked self. The theme of being independent, "moving on" and endurance,is near and dear to my own heart, as is,living and loving Maine. Good read for sure!
review 2: Easy CD to listen to. Loved the images of hard living along the coast. Characters were believable and endearing. Finished it last night and went to bed content. But this morning I find myself picking it apart a bit. Honestly, can that many awful bad things happen to one girl in such a short time frame? Is that all there is to write about living along the coast: scraping by, longing after losses, lots of death, and if you're lucky, some stolen moments of happiness along the way? I hate it when it seems that's all there is to life. less
