review 1: I had a very love hate relationship with this book. Arena One falls into the same category as The Hunger Games. While I enjoyed The Hunger Games more I found Arena One to be an engaging read and at some points even more of a brutal story. The story while at points was a bit drawn out and full of repetitive action was for the most part entertaining. I have three main issues however with Arena One.Firstly... the grammar in this book was down right awful. It was like the book never went to an editor. On every other page there was a grammar error whether it was a word missing or using the wrong form of a word or a spelling error. It was very distracting while trying to read the book.Secondly ... someone needs to get Morgan Rice a thesaurus. "Suddenly...", "Gladly...", "I reali... morezed...". These are just a few of the overly repeated phrases in this book. I felt myself cringing every time I ran across a phrase I had just read two paragraphs before.Thirdly... The characters were very boring. The main character Brooke is so flat and lifeless. Over and over she pursues her sister with single minded determination and there is absolutely nothing else to her personality. Towards the end of the book there is a random romantic element added in and it feels so obligatory it doesn't really work into the book at all. Just another aspect to this troubled book I didn't enjoy.I really wish this book had ran through with a better editor because it had a lot of potential. I am curious to read the sequel because the story was interesting and left a lot of plot to work with. But I just don't know if I could stomach reading another book so full of grammar problems. As stated before I feel so torn and love/hate with Arena One... I just don't know where I stand.
review 2: It was rather a poor man's Hunger Games, nowhere near as good or as well written, but I did enjoy the book and found it an easy and enjoyable read. Although there were many similarities with the Hunger Games, mainly with the characters rather than the plot, I liked the story line and will probably read the next in the sequel just to see where it goes.SPOILER WARNING:The most annoying part of the story for me was the invincibility of the main character, she was super-human, surviving car crashes, motor bike crashes, fighting champions in the arena and despite her injuries and exhaustion, not to mention being almost starved, winning every match, it was just too far fetched. I like a tough female lead character, but this teenage girl was beyond believable. less
