review 1: Gah! Dev Santos pisses me off. The way he treated Katya sometimes, gaaaaah, I just wanted to reach in and slap him. And when Katya continued to forgive him without making him work for it, my inner feminist got so bloody pissed. But, but, but. The book got better after a while. Coming on to the end, now, that is what hooked me. By the end of the story, I had been on a crazy emotional roller coaster ride.
review 2: This was somewhere between 3-3.5 stars. I don't think on its own that it's that awful or anything, but compared to the past couple books, this definitely didn't measure up. The main issue for me, I think, was not so much the lack of a changeling character in the romance (since I am generally a little more interested in Psy characters anyways), but th
... moreat most of the book wasn't set with either of the packs. I mean, I'm pretty sure my favorite thing about this series is just all the relationships, and I don't really mean the romantic relationships, but the family stuff (both between people who are related and those who aren't but have formed families anyways) and friendships and the pack dynamics. And even though both characters had been technically introduced before this book, they were barely built up, especially not in comparison to all the previous books. Obviously the first book doesn't count, but books 2, 4, 5, and 6 had romances including one of the DarkRiver sentinels (all of whom had been introduced early in the series), and in book 3, even though Brenna's not a sentinel, she's an important part of the pack and we were introduced to her in the first book, and Judd becomes a sentinel during the story as well and was also introduced in the first book. So it's a huge jump to go from that to this. And Katya and Dev feeling so disconnected from all the previous characters we've gotten to know and love really didn't help anything. I think the book picked up slightly near the end once we started getting more of characters who weren't Dev or Katya, but still not enough. It also didn't help that I couldn't get into the romance at all. Both of the characters fell flat individually for me, and I couldn't really buy the romance (their first kiss felt really abrupt to me, like, I needed a little more build-up than I got), and they kept kind of going back and forth between making out and Dev not trusting Katya. They were also just a little too angsty for me? If their relationship had been lighter or more enjoyable, I think I could've gotten over the fact that the characters hadn't been built up as much, but I needed to be more invested in them in characters to care about all the angstier moments of their romance, and I just didn't.So yeah, this just wasn't nearly as engaging for me overall. I mean, Hawke wasn't even mentioned once!!! That is not acceptable. I was happy to get a little follow up on Sascha/Lucas and her pregnancy, at least! I always welcome as much Sascha/Lucas as possible, and Lucas being ridiculously overprotective of Sascha was fun, as well as that scene where Sascha tells him about Rome and Jules being jealous about her having a baby. And I liked the scene with Judd and Noor when she told him that she was like him (Judd and small children is ALWAYS ADORABLE), and the reveal of how Noor and Keenan healed Katya was pretty great. Anyways, I'm hoping to like the next one more, because even though it looks like the couple could end up being kind of similar to this one, I remember really liking the bits of Max we got from Talin's book (unlike Dev, who made very little impression for me in that book), so hopefully I'll be more into the next book. less
