review 1: The Islands of The Blessed is a book about a boy training to become a bard (Essentially the same as a wizard). He has to undergo many perilous challenges with his mentor; banishing evil spirits, brawling giants and other ancient demons. But what can young Jack do when his mentor leaves him with little knowledge of the life force, can he maintain balance in the world without his mentor? There is talk that Garm, the great hound of Hel is to be let loose on the world of men. With any luck Jack's world would be consumed in his fiery wrath. Unless Jack can stop him.
review 2: Sadness at the conclusion of the Sea of Trolls-Land of the Silver Apples-Islands of the Blessed Trilogy. I love the way Nancy Farmer weaves her tale with much adventure and wickedly interesting
... more characters. No one character is all good or all bad. Even the evil have their redeeming qualities, and the mostly just have their flaws. Olaf One Brow (read: uni brow), Eric Pretty Face (badly scared), Sven the Vengeful (obvious), Thorgil (too much to sum up in a few words), Pangur Ban (Bard shapeshifted into a cat), The Bard (wise, just, imperfect), Jack (of course) and many more, but those are my favorites. I just hated Giles Crookleg, Jack's father. He loved the bratty, selfish elf child, who he brought home after his real daughter was stolen, but wanted to have nothing to do with his child, made coarse by being fostered by the hobgoblins. Hobgoblins, of course, have much more compassion than elves, who have none. less

pretty good, but ending is sudden and a bit of a random cliffhanger, being the last book.
