review 1: The way this story ends will most likely frustrate many people, who feel like the story was just starting. I actually really liked the ending, because the experiences Jack went through prepared him for his future and I was happy to imagine him in the next step of his journey. All in all, lovely, exciting, well grounded in mythology, with lovable characters it's fun to root for. Definitely a story for the elementary and middle school crowd, since it also is one of the cleanest stories I think I've ever read.
review 2: I'll start with the good parts of this book, since it wasn't all bad. I really appreciated that Nancy Farmer went to such lengths to research Celtic and Norse mythology. It added a nice depth to the book, reading about characters based on people ... morewho really existed. There was even an appendix in the back that had more information about the people and myths included in the book, so it was actually educational!But "The Islands of the Blessed" was probably the most disappointing end to a series that I have ever read. The whole thing felt more like a mismatched jumble of activity than a story; the characters frequently jumped around between tasks so often that I lost track of what was happening or what the whole point of their adventure was in the first place.All in all, it was a nice read, but should be considered more of a side-story than an ending for the Sea of Trolls books. less
