review 1: First, T-bob? T-bob? And then T-John? Why? Hahaha, no! Had a hard time with some of the language used (whatchu). I did not care for the protagonist, nor did I care for the love interest. I also didn't like that she smoked. And I totally laughed out loud at the part (out of the blue) where Max tells her he wants to lick her toes. Who says that?!?! Hahaha. Anyway, I had to quit on this book because I didn't like how it was going. I was way too annoyed at parts. Like Max can hear things far away but couldn't hear a conversation going on in the next apartment. And he’s so weak at times, behaving like a five year old when there are people yelling at him. Doesn't he know how to hide his emotions. You don’t need to give away everything. It’s OK to bluff. I didn't like him o... morer CeeCee so in the end I had to quit or go insane yelling at them.
review 2: Sitting back with a big silly grin on my face after finally finishing this unexpected thrill of a book. The title and the cover weren't particularly appealing to me, but friends had touted it highly. Should have listened sooner! The interaction between the two main characters, Max & Charlotte, is dark chocolate-with-cayenne intense. They are not the typical couple one sees in PNR novels. I was fist pumping the air when I first read CeeCee's physical description: short spiky hair and cafe au lait skin. How often does one see that? She's a Bad Mama Jama, who can kick ass in high heels. Similarly, Max is a study in contrasts: powerfully male, vulnerable and conflicted. In a total departure from the tired romance novel formula, he is the one who needs protecting and she is the one to provide it. His helplessness somehow makes him even hotter. (I love that the guy can't drive and needs his woman to take the wheel!)Their dialogue is by turns crisp, wickedly witty, sexy without ever being vulgar, and earnest without being sappy. The insight into their thoughts builds a delicious tension out of the yearning and conflict Max and CeeCee feel for each other. Best of all, author Nancy Gideon has set her MCs on a path that makes their future a giant question mark, HEA in this book notwithstanding. This is a well crafted, clever, unexpected thrill ride. Thankfully, there is more Max & CeeCee pond-filling interaction to come. less
