review 1: I haven't even finished this, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think I will. It's just not good. It's not the worst I've ever read, but it's certainly a cousin. Or sibling. The world building is lackluster, with a lot of long, dull descriptions instead of the preferable "show, don't tell" method, but it's the gimmicks that really make it unbearable. You can tell the author was trying really hard to make it "cool" by having a zombie teenager who, yep, you guessed it, acts nothing like a real teenager. Instead she acts like an awkward cliche, with lots of eye rolling, "whatever!!"'s and some questionable phrases. It feels desperate. Then there's the characters, none of whom I'm interested in. The boyfriend seems fairly normal and dull, the main character is self obsessed ... moreand stupid, constantly acting as though she is an authority when in reality she's ridiculously unprepared and cowardly, and the detective who is being set up as the third member of a ridiculously dull love triangle is unremarkable until he randomly meets her in a bar where her boyfriend is and pulls some skeezy moves on her, then disappears and reappears to give her his phone number. Fantastic. Honestly, there is so much UF out there and it can be pretty easily broken down into four categories;Good and original.Good but not original.Started off good but died a tragic death via writing. And finally, a cheap attempt to hop on the band wagon with every trope you can think of plus the prerequisite "quirky" side character. Guess which one this book falls into?
review 2: 2.5 stars. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. I think the problem is, there wasn't really any action.Victory Vaughn has a lot going on. She is descended from a long line of Demon Hunters. Her business is demons. She is hired by folks that has demons. She has an on again off again relationship with a Werewolf that just happens to be a lawyer and political advocate all the paranormals that have came out of the closet. Including Zombies. Unfortunately for Vicky things are fixing to get a lot more frustrating. The big bad demon that killed her father and marked her at 18 is back, and causing havoc. That on again off again boyfriend, well he's basically a prick and just because they don't happen to see eye to eye on politics, well it pisses him off. Well that and he doesn't like the fact that she has no qualms taking money from a local mobster to get rid of his demons. So yea, there's that. Then of course you have her room mate.Julie is a vampire, and she just happens to be the real Juliette in Romeo and Juliette. She was a great character and I hope the next in the series has a lot more of her in it. I also like Tina, Vicky's apprentice Demon Hunter who just happens to be dead. More to the point, she's a zombie and hilarious. The world building in this book was good, and I liked the characters well enough to read the next in the series. less
