Bad Hair Day Mystery
review 1: I used to like Nancy Cohen's books, but with the Bad Hair Day series, that has changed. There are conversations don't follow the subject, people talking and suddenly someone chimes in with a completely off-the-wall remark, the detective (soon-to-be-husband) is upset because his wife-2-b (Marla) isn't concentrating on her upcoming wedding, and he turns around and disappears for 2 late nights and is found holding hands with an old flame. The story is difficult to follow, I didn't like the characters. One sister says her husband can take care of her business affairs, and the next page she gets angry and says she cannot depend on him for anything and you get the idea she is planning on a divorce. Marla, who just grabs control of the crime, gets upset when her fiancee doesn't... more share everything about the crime with her, then contemplates breaking into a business to look at some photographs. She just blunders around, causes one murder, and later says, it's in the past, I'm looking towards the future (more or less). Not an enjoyable read.
review 2: Shear Murder is a fun mystery/romance. There is quite a bit of detailed wedding information because the character, Marla, is not only a bridesmaid in a wedding, but also planning her own wedding.Imagine finding a dead body under the wedding cake table! Suspects abound in this story, and Marla is well know by local police as someone who likes to get involved. I think that there was maybe a little too much information gained by eavesdropping, but Marla is eager to solve the crime.I was a little worried when I saw that the book contained just over two pages of a Cast of Characters with the names and brief bio of everyone in the book (including pets!), but keeping track of everyone was not a problem even without the list. This is the tenth in the “Bad Hair Day” mystery series, but it is very much a stand alone. This was the first in the series that I read and I never felt like I didn’t know something that had happened in the past. I am not sure if this is the last in the series, but if it is, fans will be pleased. less
