review 1: I wanted to like this, but something just didn't ring true about it all. I wasn't sure when it was set, and it seemed a bit anachronistic in places. I was over half way through when I realised why it wasn't engaging me - I just didn't really empathise with the characters or really like any of them. The main narrator seemed like a whiny drip, his girlfriend barely developed but portrayed as a saint, and the central guy they all fluttered around was just an obnoxious idiot who clearly had deep mental and other problems, but no redeaming features. I feel bad writing such a negative review.
review 2: Unfortunately this pandered to every Oxford stereotype going and just by this alienated me. This was not "my" Oxford and i find it a little sad that the assumption sti... morell exists that Oxford is full of wildly rich people. Middle class, yes; rich, not necessarily... I did read through it all but the main character did not elicit my sympathy nor did I find the resolution appropriate for the manner in which he is described. less
