review 1: Strange how polarizing this book seems to be. I thought it was brilliant. But it isn't for everybody. If you were born in the late 70s-early 80s, played GI Joe (or read Nancy Drew), got into punk rock, saw your friends go to war or get fucked up by life, you will recognize yourself in this comic. The art captures the seeming vastness of the world as you're teetering on the brink of adolescence. The ending is a bit dreamy and ambiguous, which might not appeal to people who prefer a more definite resolution. But I thought it worked very well. Anyway, it's not a comic about plot. It's somewhat about character, yes. But more than that, it's about perfectly capturing a moment in our culture, and the feeling you get when you first realize you're growing up.
review 2:... more Though I really dislike comparing an author's various works, I have to say: This works for me on a level that Swallow Me Whole did not.The fantastical-realism was intriguing here. The way Powell illustrates the unabashed violence and brutality of his characters in their younger years and the way that violence, both enacted and witnessed, influences their adulthood is gripping and tragic. I found myself gripped with great and bracing myself for a resolution of tears, therapy, almost forgetting the fantasy element at play. Despite this factor, the book plays out much more realistically than this traditional resolution of healing and absolution. Powell creates a world we can both touch and feel, while allowing that life isn't always all "real." less
