review 1: Disaster porn at its finest. Rich seems to perfectly capture New York Jewish hypochondriacal anxiety in Mitchell Zukor's character. The plot sort of fell apart for me at the end. The meat of the book, the reason to read, is to watch New York and the surrounding boroughs get overtaken by an uber-storm, and how New York's demise affects the rest of the country. The peripheral characters and plot are necessary for the structure of the novel, but they do tend to seem like afterthoughts, especially since the descriptions of the disaster (the scenes where Mitchell and Jane are canoeing around the flooded city, specifically) are so beautiful and haunting.
review 2: I liked the premise and thought there were several good ideas in there, as well as some great lines and
... morefun flashes of wit. It was clearly well-researched and prescient in many ways. But the characters were not well-developed, and I found myself losing interest in their interactions. Also, the author just doesn't trust his readers enough, and really hammers us with repeated explanations of themes and metaphors, which really annoyed me. less
