Canongate Myths
review 1: An interesting retelling of the Japanese creation myth with a focus on Izanami as the death goddess. Certainly more engaging than the Kojiki itself, and it is interesting to see how the substories Kirino puts into the story tie in to everything. However, it is hard to review this simply because it is such a complete narrative...it just lacks luster in a strange way. Perhaps I was expecting something more stunning or compelling, but at the same time I can't fault it too much for being a decent read that does add a lot to the source material (not that adding to the Kojiki is particularily difficult).
review 2: This book (like many in the Canongate series) is the retelling of the Japanese myth of Izanagi & Izanami and (again like the other books) adds its own endi
... moreng to the myth. I find it difficult to describe the book, the books does not really follow a standard language structure and sometimes the change in action between chapters and sections feel abrupt - as if the author were trying to string together disconnected stories together. The ending is also somewhat unsatisfying though it is definitely not cliched, which lends it some rescuing grace. However on the whole the book does give a different experience to the reader and perhaps just for that it is worth a read. less

While the mythos is interesting the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

A fascinating and beautiful book, but ultimately felt a little abrupt.

I think this wasn't the best translation.
